Introduction
Controlled vocabularies are necessary for the useful and practical sharing and re-use of data. Ontologies in neuroscience are formal representations of the set of terms used within a domain area of research and the relationships between the terms. Closely linked to the Program on Digital Brain Atlasing, the Program on Ontologies of Neural Structures (PONS) aims to establish a structured lexicon for the translation and definition of terms describing neural structures at multiple levels of granularity.
There are three Task Forces involved in the PONS effort:
